1. You will stand a much better chance of shooting open views successfully if you plan to do it early or late in the day. At these times, the sun is at a low angle revealing stronger textures and there is less likelihood of atmospheric haze.
2. It's best to avoid placing the horizon in the centre of the image. The "rules" of composition suggest it should be along a line which divides the image into thirds but in practice it's best to simply allow it to fall where it creates a good balance between sky and foreground.
3. When shooting subjects close to the camera it's best to use a small aperture as depth of field decreases quite considerably when the camera is focused at close distances.
